Located 330 kilometers southeast of south China’s Hainan Province, the Xisha Islands are one of four big island groups in the South China Sea. The Penghu Archipelago consists of 64 islands scattered over an expanse of sea 60 kilometers long and 22 kilometers Wide in the Taiwan Straits. The islands of the Penghu group are generally flat, and many of them are characterized by vertical cliffs dropping to the sea. From a distance, they look like mesas rising abruptly from the water.
