Rule of Thirds
By IslEd_Lori at 06/05/2009 - 13:57

When taking photos, human nature causes most people to center their subject in the frame. While that's not a bad thing, it's fun to mix things up and create more dynamic compositions. Enter the rule of thirds. The rule of thirds is a compositional guideline which uses a grid to divide the frame into 9 sections using two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines (as shown on the photo above). The intersection of those lines are a great place to put your subject for a more interesting composition.

Jad Davenport, ISLANDS contributing photographer/writer, recently traveled to Cuba for an upcoming feature on the island (see it soon in the July/August 2009 issue).

They say a picture speaks a thousand words and, in light of the recent White House announcement, I'd tend to agree. Check back Monday when ISLANDS editor-in-chief Eddy Patricelli talks with Jad about his trip!
