I'm looking for suggestions for a Carribean island vacation. I'll be travelling with two other women and we're looking for someplace with a low crime rate where we'll feel safe exploring a bit on our own. We're also hoping for a variety of activities and excursions, particularly hiking, kayaking and snorkelling. Of course we'd like beautiful beaches too but I imagine that will be the easiest requirement to satisfy. Thanks for your help.

I suggest Cayo Guillermo, Cuba. I went there 2 years ago with my sister. We went in April...good choice, not too crowdy but enough to have fun!
Two girls (30 years old) on their own.
We had a blast. We stayed at the Sol Cayo Guillermo. Perfect hotel, not too small and not too big. It's an hotel style villas, it's not a huge resort with big building. It's like you have your own bungalow by the beach! Everything is perfect, the rooms, the staff, the food and the beach!
The beach is AWESOME!
I went to Mexico (west and east coast), my sister went to Dominican republic and Cayo guillermo it's the nicest beach we saw! Very small waves, turquoise, and the sand is white!
We did one excursion. the bus take us to another beach, Playa Pilar, not too far (15 min) but you can go by hiking (1 hour). they bring us to an tiny island (Media Luna) by catamaran. This little island is very cool, looks like an old pirates cove! We went snorkeling around the island, very nice!
The only thing they have on this island is a bar and a grill, So after the snorkeling, we drunk a beer and eaten a huge grilled langoustine! Verrrry Good!
Other then that, we didn't leave the resort, it was SO nice and fun! So I can't tell about exploring the area..but I guess it's safe. Cayo guillermo is a very small island. I think there is just 5 or 6 hotels on that island!
The ambiance of the resort is really cool. You can lay on the beach all day and doing nothing and relax, and you can do the fiesta by night!
I have RELLY good memories of that trip! My sister and I still talk about it often...How we have fun and everything went So well!
And beside, My mom went there 2 years in a row...But she was at the Sol Melia Cayo Guillermo..Awesome too!
I also went to Cayo Largo..Very nice place, Perfect beaches, but nothing going on at night and not too much activities to do..but it's REALLY nice!
Veronica.
