DRCRETEN

As I was growing up I was always told that my Grandfather originally came from the island of Crete. He immigrated to the U.S. sometime prior to 1917, when my father was born. I know very little about him, but I do know that his first name was George. I was told his real last name was Pislaskis, or something similar to that and when he arrived at Ellis Island, it was changed to Creten.
Because I know so little of him, or of Crete for that matter, I was wondering if there were records kept of those the left the island to come to the U.S. and how I could contact those in charge of them. I would also like to find out alot more about my ancestry and would love to someday travel to Crete to explore my heritage and possibly meet some distant relatives. Any tips on traveling to Crete? My wife and I are also SCUBA divers and was wondering if there are any dive centers and/or resorts there?
Thanks for any help I can get!
