I'm heading to the Big Island Monday and I'd love to hear your favorite things to do there! Most of my time will be spent on the Kona-Kohala coast.

Don't be ashamed to be a tourist...I have been to Kona and I loved the snorkling and sailing--don't forget to spend some time w/ the whales and dolphins..though the dolphins tend to be a tad arrogant...they subscribe to the image that their PR dept. has been propagating for many years--that they are intelligent, friendly, and cute--add arrogant to that list and you have them pegged. still, they are handsome and lovable beasts, no denying..the volcano action is fun too and give the surfboard a whirl, AND take a late nite tour of the beach and see stars that appear to be just within reach..msgmaui.

ohhh--just a quick post script correction--I think the whales are in the northerly seas at this time of year so viewing them from Hawaii might be somewhat difficult unless you are Wonder Women or Super Girl...excuse my faux pas--i have always gone to Hawaiian Isles In January and at that time of year the whales are in abundance-vacationing just like me..msgmaui.

Thanks for the tips! You're right - no whales this time of year, but I still had a super trip! A few dolphins and an abundance of sea turtles. We also saw the stars from the summit of Mauna Kea which was fantastic! Until I get a full blog post together, you can see more of what I did here (http://traveltalk.islands.com/blogs/?q=node/84).
